What’s on in the yourSpace Community Gallery & artCube This Fall

Station Gallery’s project spaces offer visitors a “quick-hit” art experience. Both the yourSpace and artCube are the most visible exhibition galleries. The sunlit corridor hosts an exciting array of community displays and local talent. In the lobby area, the artCube is usually a visitor’s first point of contact with art displayed at the gallery. We’re super excited about the upcoming fall 2016 exhibitions in these spaces.

Kicking things off in September will be selected works from UOIT and Durham College students associated with the Visual Arts Club. The autumn sun will highlight local post-secondary art. “Our main goals are to strengthen the artistic community on campus and provide opportunities for upcoming artists within the local art scene,” says the Club. “Being part of the club, students are provided with the tools to be creative and a welcoming space on campus.”

Displaying in a parallel artCube exhibition will be the exquisite work of Toronto-based artist and printmaker, Liz Menard. You won’t believe your eyes. Menard has hand cut, coloured, etched and shaped deciduous tree leaves from Japanese paper. The artist states, “Watersheds are living entities with richly layered histories, narratives and morphologies. In my work, I explore watersheds and the boundaries where rivers and cities converge.”

Later in the season, SG will be proud to honour the creative achievements of a local artistic grouping in our midst. This year marks a significant milestone for Ajax Creative Arts: their Golden Anniversary. For fifty years, the arts group has been a warm and welcoming community space for talented individuals in Durham Region. The yourSpace gallery walls will be adorned with selected originals from the ACA 50th Anniversary Calendar, one for each month of this celebratory year.

SG is a special place for artists and arts enthusiasts of every age and ability. The youngest creative mind to be featured in a project space is Callum Donovan. At a young age, Callum came to the attention of many with his quirky and fantastical figurines. This eleven-year-old regularly takes classes at SG and won the top children’s award at last year’s Secret World juried show.  Callum’s Creations share an affinity with the whimsical stylings of Tim Burton. His exquisitely crafted characters are absolutely breath-taking. A must see!
