CHARCOAL POWDER PAINTING

Learn techniques for using powdered charcoal/vine charcoal/knead-able eraser and gesso to evoke contemplation or action through a black and white rendering.
Suggested Materials List:

Canvas surface large enough to received rapid painting strokes when applying gesso with a larger brush.

Jar of powdered charcoal

Paint brush for applied a detailed sketch with powder

Package of fine vine charcoal

Knead-able eraser
-
Gesso – I use Liquitex or Golden.

Tear off Palette
-
Water
-
Brush cleaner
-
Large house painter sash brush or large 1” good quality hair brush.

Fixative spray – after to fix the drawing and painted elements together.

Glaze – spray or roll on after many layers of fixative. Requires two to three coats
Tools:

A floor size easel.

Large Cotton Drop cloth

Paint brushes -- small end, long handled brush for sketching with charcoal

Gesso
-
Rags
-
Large brushes 2” house sash brushes or a large 1” wide – 1.25” long good quality hair-brush for applying gesso

Water Bucket for washing brushes

Chair if needed and a beverage to keep you hydrated.
