CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPE PAINTING

This course is designed for students interested in contemporary urban, suburban, rural or generally non-traditional landscape painting in oil (ie: city, highway, architectural) with a focus on non-traditional colour application and experimentation.

Students will paint a landscape of (my/their) choosing from a reference photo using a layering technique.

An understanding of process and foundation will be provided through discussion and in-class demonstrations. Colour application, composition and perspective will be addressed.

Stylistic experimentation and individuality will be encouraged.

 

Required Materials List:

  • Paint Titanium White 37ml (or larger) 

  • Paint Raw Umber 37ml (or larger) 

  • Paint Payne’s Gray 37ml (or larger) 

  • Paint Cad Yellow Pale Hue 37ml (or larger) 

  • Paint Cad Deep Red Hue 37ml (or larger) 

  • Paint Phthalo Blue 37ml (or larger) 

  • Brush Round #4 

  • Brush Flat, Filbert or Bright #2 

  • Brush Flat, Filbert or Bright #4 

  • Brush Flat #6 

  • Brush Flat #10 

  • *oil painters: M. Graham Walnut Alkyd Medium 4oz 

  • *oil painters: Linseed or Walnut Oil 4oz 

  • Photo reference of urban landscape (city, town, highways, etc)

  • Pencil

  • Rag(s) for cleanup

  • Long rounded pallet knife for mixing paint

  • Additional pallet knives of your choosing for use as painting tool

  • Oil Painters Pallet - Pallet of your choice (recommend acrylic or wood)

  • Cups/containers

  • Clean yogurt cups acceptable

  • Jars (x2) with screw top lid.

 

Option/Recommended Materials List:

  • Paint Cerulean Blue 37ml (or larger) 

  • Paint Cobalt Blue 37ml (or larger) 

  • Paint Ivory Black 37ml (or larger) 

  • Additional paint colours of your choice / Needs **BASED ON PHOTO REFERENCE

Surface:

  • Canvas board /stretched canvas /wood panel *prepared with gesso. *Pre-toned ground with thin wash of colour (raw umber etc.) 18 x 24 *or similar depending on preference and/or reference image

  • Brush Round #1 

  • Brush Round #3 

  • Brush Flat, Filbert or Bright #12 or larger 

Photo Reference:

  • Urban landscape (city, town, highways, etc.)

  • PRINTED or DIGITAL

  • (ipad, mobile)
