Paint Like the Masters

By Kate Walker

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to bring home an authentic painting by Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, or Pablo Picasso? Well, put away those plans for your next museum heist a la Ocean’s 8 and pull out a paintbrush because Station Gallery’s Paint Like the Masters workshop series lets you bring home your own masterpiece inspired by some of the world’s most renowned artists. Choose from a range of youth and adult classes to unleash your inner artistic master with the following programs at Station Gallery this fall.

Grab your easel and acrylic paints and get ready for these upcoming youth programs that explore two influential artists of the late 19th century:

Paint Like van Gogh (Sunday, October 20th, 12:00-4:00 pm)
Reflect upon this post-impressionist artist whose paintings provide a direct sense of how the artist viewed the world, through his eyes, heart, and mind. Van Gogh articulated the inner spirituality of man and nature through a vibrant colour palette and thick brushstrokes. Our Paint like van Gogh workshop explores the artist’s impasto technique in which he applies undiluted colour directly onto the canvas. Van Gogh believed that colour could act independently from form and composition as an aesthetic bearer of emotion and movement. Test out your own palette knife skills to re-enact van Gogh’s impasto technique in a painting of your very own.

Paint Like Monet (Sunday, November 10th, 12:00-4:00 pm)
Take inspiration from the founder of French impressionism and practitioner of expressing one’s perceptions before nature in the Paint like Monet workshop. Recreate Monet’s vibrant landscape paintings using broad and rapid brushstrokes to capture the fleeting effects of light, atmosphere, and movement. Embrace the unpredictability of nature in search of your own unique impressionist style during this workshop.

Under the guidance of artist instructor, Victoria Wallace, learn the techniques of profound and influential artists who shaped some of the most defining styles of the 20th century in our Paint Like the Masters adult workshops.

Paint Like the Masters: Pop Art (Sunday, October 20, 10:00am to 4:00pm)
Become inspired by the international art movement that took off in the 1960s in our Paint like the Masters: Pop Art workshop. Study the direct relationship between popular culture and the techniques of its production and dissemination. Discover the commercial aesthetics of artists like Andy Warhol, Richard Hamilton, and Roy Lichtenstein. Design your own branded prints in the style of Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup can images or recreate Lichtenstein’s use of Ben Day dots in his large-scale paintings. Register for this workshop here.

Paint Like the Masters: Gustav Klimt (Sunday, October 27, 10:00am to 4:00pm)
Follow in the footsteps of this Art Nouveau painter who embedded allusions of the human psyche into his lavishly decorated figures in our Paint like Gustav Klimt workshop. Explore the human form through the lens of Klimt who boldly broke from artistic conventions and instead favoured expressive human figures who made their desires and emotions known. Paint Like the Masters: Cubism (Sunday, February 9, 10:00am to 4:00pm)
Immerse yourself in the styles of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, who challenged Western conceptions of pictorial representation. Understand how these artists shattered the surface of their canvases into a series of planes and shifting views. In this workshop, you will get a chance to create your own self-portrait collage that defies reality and representation using the same radical artistic experimentation that was led by Picasso and Braque. Register for this workshop here.
