Happy December! As we drift into the holiday season, we here at SG are very excited to present the upcoming 26th edition of the annual members’ exhibition, titled Perfect Moment. This ever-popular, year-end show inspires artists and art enthusiasts to create a submission based on a given theme. “Perfect Moment” was embraced by the gallery’s creative membership as an open-ended and highly versatile theme.
Forty-eight years ago, Station Gallery was established by forward-thinking artists and community leaders who envisioned the cultural potential of Whitby and the Durham Region as a whole. Whitby Arts Incorporated transformed a defunct railway building into the pulsating cultural hub we now know as Station Gallery. It’s a spirit that continues to guide us.
This year we’ll celebrate the 26th year of our juried members’ exhibition. This much-anticipated event ushered in a new standard of excellence in community programming.
The jurors Elisa Coish (Curator at Stouffville’s Latcham Art Centre) Sandy Saad (Curator at Bowmanville’s Visual Art Centre) and Todd Tremeer (Artist and Educator) had much to choose from when a few weeks ago. Theirs was a tall order—to select the best from the best. Our trio was amazed at the full range of material and conceptual approaches submitted by artists in our region and beyond. Each piece was thoughtfully and intently considered by the jurors. Those of the highest caliber of artistic merit that best interpreted this year’s theme will be displayed throughout all gallery spaces.
This year’s winners have been chosen, but “it’s not over ‘til it’s over.” Later this month, as you spend time with over 120 exquisite, thought-provoking works in this year’s show, we’ll invite you to ask yourself “what stands out?” We’ll invite our viewing audiences to “note-and-vote” their favourite piece. Please take a few moments to cast a ballot for the Perfect Moment: It’s your Choice people’s choice prize. We’ll announce the winner early next year on January 21st. I hope you’ll join us on the evening of Wednesday, December 19th, my friends—you’re always welcome at Station Gallery!
