Art Interrupted

How does an artist know when a work is done? During this hour encore, we’ll investigate artistic choices—some deliberate, others circumstantial—which resulted in an incomplete creative statement. Artists leave behind uncompleted works for a variety of reasons. We’ll look at paintings, drawings and sculptures that remain unfinished to this day…

Contentious Nude in Canadian Art (with John Di Leonardo)

The nude has been one of the more challenging images in the history of Canadian art, its depiction has seldom been objective, it has always been a reflection of the cultural and religious attitudes of its time. Join artist and educator John Di Leonardo in an encore discussion and visual presentation of this controversial theme. Explore why we as Canadians still feel uncomfortable with this subject, and why the nude has played an important role in the evolution of contemporary Canadian art in the early part of the 20th century.

As documentarians attempted to capture the Great Wars, the Depression and the Cold War Era, photographers explored all aspects of the medium, and in doing so revealed much about who we are.

The future is today. We’ll riff on the catchphrase—“May the Force be with you”— inspired by the 1977 sci-fi classic Star Wars. During this hour-long art talk, we’ll scan the vast artistic galaxy, sighting visual artists who imagined and depicted the future.
