Welcome to a new series of posts where we chat with the volunteers who help bring SG programs and events to life.

First up is Marnie Packman. Marnie is a visual artist based in the Durham Region. She was recently selected to take part in the 88 Keys Project in Oshawa. This public art project features three upright pianos transformed by artists set up around the city for people to play. Marnie’s piano will be unveiled on Thursday, August 4 at 1 p.m. at the Northview Community Centre in Oshawa. Read on to learn more about why Marnie makes time to volunteer in her community at Station Gallery.

Hi, Marnie! Please tell us a little bit about yourself.

Marnie: I’m a recent graduate of the Visual Arts Program at York University. I grew up in Durham Region and have always enjoyed the arts. Visual art is my passion, while music remains my hobby. With this in mind, I combine these elements and make art based on my interest in music. While I was in university I joined the Oshawa Art Association to have my work exhibited locally. As a result of the association and attending exhibition openings, I continue to meet many artists from the Durham Region.

How long have you been an SG volunteer?

Marnie: I began volunteering with the Station Gallery in October of 2015.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering at SG?

Marnie: I enjoy assisting with the annual members’ exhibition as well as the opening receptions. Being able to interact with fellow artists that share the same artistic values is one of my favourite parts of volunteering.

What do you love most about art?

Marnie: I love art because it is a non-verbal means of expression and I feel that comes through in my work. See for yourself on my website and Etsy store Art Made by Marnie.

Thanks so much Marnie! Volunteers help keep art alive and thriving in our community. Stay tuned for more posts that shine the spotlight on SG’s amazing volunteers.
