Opening Reception for Noni Kaur: Microbial Feasts and local photographer Mikki Simeunovich

Noni Kaur
Microbial Feasts
February 1 – March 22, 2020
in the Coppa Gallery & Heritage Galleries

Noni Kaur’s practice explores her cultural history and how particular materials are adapted or transformed through use in different spaces/ environments. This winter, she will present an immersive, multi-sensory, dyed-coconut installation that bridges the gaps between gender, culture, the body, and the non-human world.

As a Singaporean woman of Punjabi descent, the artist’s identity is by its own nature, intersectional. The works she creates, explore her cultural history and how particular materials are adapted or transformed through use in different spaces/environments. A cultural practice in India and Singapore is rangoli: theact of using coloured materials to decorate floors in domestic and public spaces. Traditionally made from powder pigments, flowers, rice, or sand, rangoli designs are a revelation of beauty and the acquisition of auspiciousness around significant events and festivals.

Mikki’s images are published extensively—both locally and internationally—recently appearing in the Toronto Star. She received a degree in Photography from Sheridan College, while serving as Photo Editor and principal photographer for the Toronto-based Performer Magazine.

With this solo exhibition, join us as we follow her on an international journey of discovery spanning three decades on land and five years scuba diving the Caribbean.
