They will learn the process of each inking technique by drawing them as the instructor shows onto 2" squares and compiling them together onto a loop of string or keychain. A 'take the mystery out of...' workshop designed to explain and walk through steps involved in starting and working on an oil painting. This entry level workshop will cover: materials; choosing and preparing a surface; basic drawing transfer techniques; an overview of the layer painting process; studio safety. 

Please note: This is not a painting class, as much as it is a guide to get started with some of the more complex questions answered before beginning. Hands-on will include preparing a pre-gesso'd surface, through to the point of painting the first layer of an illustration.

Students will make a twenty page sketchbook using paper and string. The instructor will teach the students how to fold and assemble the booklets, as well as use a basic kettle stitch and create a cover page. The project can end once the book is assembled, but will extend to using an exacto knife for finishing touches geared towards older students.

Students will leave with six individual pieces of art, including three watercolour paintings, one collage poster, one book, and four trading cards. They will learn about colour, line, value, shape, storytelling, and bookmaking. The course is designed so that if you follow along with each lesson, you can turn your previous works into a book in the final class, or you can create a new book in the final class instead.

This course is designed for students interested in contemporary urban, suburban, rural or generally non-traditional landscape painting in oil (ie: city, highway, architectural) with a focus on non-traditional colour application and experimentation.

Students will paint a landscape of (my/their) choosing from a reference photo using a layering technique.

An understanding of process and foundation will be provided through discussion and in-class demonstrations. Colour application, composition and perspective will be addressed.

Stylistic experimentation and individuality will be encouraged.

Students will learn how to fold and design a sleeve for a book cover. Through the process of designing their covers, students will learn about patterns and how to recreate them using different media.
